Remember that a fetus gets its nutrients from the mom since it is attached by the placenta. Whatever the fetus needs it gets from the mom like oxygen, glucose... and whatever the fetus doesn't, it removes it from the body which goes to the mom, and the mom will excrete it. This occurs through the placenta and the umbilical vein/umbilical artery.
MARK SCHEME
Example of answer:
The fetus is attached to the uterine lining of the mother by the placenta. The placenta contains the blood capillaries of the fetus which are closely associated with the mother's blood. Diffusion of substances such as oxygen and glucose will occur across the placenta from the mother to the fetus via the umbilical cord. The glucose and oxygen are both used for respiration. Carbon dioxide and urea will diffuse from the fetus' blood to the mother's for removal. (9 points here)
