CARBON CYCLE- an essay from JUN 2007

I chose this because it's the shortest I could find at the moment LOL

OK. Let's look at Q- something from the cow comes out its bum and goes back to the trees...

When animals excrete urea, and egest faeces, these waste are acted upon by decomposers such as bacteria and fungi, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This carbon dioxide is then taken in by plants for photosynthesis to manufacture carbohydrate.

Also, nutrients such as ammonium compounds are released during decomposition, which are converted to nitrites, and then to nitrates by nitrifying bacteria (process is called nitrification), and these nitrates are absorbed by plants to manufacture proteins.

At R, something comes out of the cow and factory into the trees

The cow respires, producing carbon dioxide which is used by plants for photosynthesis.
Combustion of fuels at the factory produce carbon dioxide which is also taken in for photosynthesis.

At S, gases are released... a bit of Chem here...
possible gases include sulphur dioxide- which leads to acid rain when the gas mixes with rain water
nitrogen oxides- effects same as sulphur dioxide
carbon monoxide- binds with haemoglobin, making it unable to carry oxygen

ANSWER SCHEME- how many marks did I get?? :) -a possible 13 out of 10...
